My Father Is God

Christ tells us, in the Lord's prayer, to call God “Father.” In the Old Testament, God’s relationship with his covenant people is sometimes compared to that of a father with his children. Psalm 103:13

When Jesus came, he came to make a way for God’s covenant people to actually be God’s children by adoption. Jesus was God’s only Son, but it was the will of Jesus and of the Father that Jesus should be the older brother of many adopted children of God.  Romans 8:29

When Jesus spoke to his followers, he spoke of God as their Father. Luke 12:29–32 and John 20:17. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught us to call God “Father” when we pray. He wants us to understand that God welcomes us when we come to him.

If we know God welcomes us as a father welcomes his children, we will be confident in coming to tell him of our needs.
